Learners Begin Using Online Tool to Complete AAFP CME Quizzes

By News Staff

As of July 1, physician-learners had access to a new online tool to complete AAFP journal-based and self-study CME learning materials and submit them for credit. The tool's features allow learners to complete all CME assessments and/or evaluations on their computers and Web-enabled mobile devices, have their performance assessed immediately, and receive their scores instantly.

Learners log in to the AAFP website to complete the online quizzes for the CME learning activities they select, such as those for American Family Physician, Family Practice Management and FP Essentials.

Paper quiz cards, answer sheets and evaluations will no longer be printed for journal-based and self-study CME. However, paper materials published before July 1 will continue to be accepted until the expiration date specified on the material.

The online CME tool supports changes in the rule governing AMA Physician's Recognition Award, or PRA, Category 1 credit. The rule now requires that CME credit be awarded only to learners who meet a minimum performance level for journal-based and self-study CME activities, whether presented in audio, CD-ROM, online, print, video or another format.

The AAFP Commission on Continuing Professional Development approved a minimum performance level of 80 percent to earn the AMA PRA Category 1 credit for AAFP CME activities. This minimum performance level applies only to enduring materials and journal CME, not to live courses.

All accredited CME providers are required to comply with the rule in order to award AMA PRA Category 1 credit. This includes the AAFP, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to award AMA PRA Category 1 credit in addition to AAFP Prescribed credit.
