Free CMS Software Speeds up Payment Process

By News Staff

CMS has developed a software program that may help physicians get paid for Medicare claims faster. The software, Medicare Remit Easy Print, or MREP, will allow physicians to receive claims information back from Medicare electronically. In 2003, CMS began to push physicians to submit Medicare claims electronically.

The free MREP software is available to physicians through their Medicare carriers, including Medicare durable medical equipment carriers. The carrier sends the physician an electronic remittance advice that contains all the information provided in the standard paper remittance.

Receiving the remittance advice electronically allows the physician to
  • create and print reports of denied or adjusted claims;
  • print remittance information and forward it with claims to secondary payers;
  • navigate and view remittance information; and
  • search for claim information, including the claim number, beneficiary's last name, procedure code and service date.
A special edition of CMS' online publication Medlearn Matters (PDF file: 5 pages / 369 KB. More about PDFs.) gives more details about the program, including computer system requirements.

MREP is part of CMS' remittance advice initiative, announced in June 2005, which aims to speed up the flow of Medicare claims information as well as to reduce the number of standard paper remittance advices printed and mailed to physicians.
