Robert Kolodner, M.D.
Kolodner comes from the Veterans Health Administration, or VA, where he served as the chief health informatics officer and oversaw the development of the VA's electronic health records systems.
In his statement, Leavitt said Kolodner "joins us at a time when we are making steady progress in advancing the president's health IT initiative, and his (Kolodner's) experience in patient care, health IT and government will be invaluable to those efforts."
Kolodner replaces David Brailer, M.D., Ph.D., who resigned the post on April 20. President Bush named Brailer as the nation's first health IT coordinator in May 2004.
