For the third time in three months, Sanofi Pasteur and the CDC are notifying vaccine providers about potency issues with the manufacturer's novel influenza A (H1N1) vaccine in prefilled syringes. In a Feb. 2 health update distributed through the CDC's Health Alert Network, agency officials said all lots of Sanofi's H1N1 vaccine in prefilled syringes that were not included in two earlier recalls -- one announced on Dec. 15 and the other on Jan. 29 -- should be administered by Feb. 15 regardless of the expiration dates printed on the products' packaging.

The prevalence of novel influenza A (H1N1) has dictated some new twists for National Influenza Vaccination Week. The CDC and HHS launched the annual event during the 2006-07 flu season, with the goal of getting people vaccinated against the seasonal flu throughout January and beyond.

Influenza isn't the only serious respiratory illness physicians need to be thinking about when it comes to this busy flu season. Anne Schuchat, M.D., director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said during a recent media briefing that the agency has seen an increase in serious pneumococcal infections across the country.

A second manufacturer is recalling novel influenza A (H1N1) vaccine because of potency issues. AstraZeneca's MedImmune biologics unit said Dec. 22 that it is recalling 4.7 million doses of its live, attenuated intranasal H1N1 vaccine after nine lots failed stability testing. Four other lots that still met specifications during testing also were recalled as a precautionary measure.

On a cold, dreary November day, hundreds of people -- many pushing strollers or toting well-bundled toddlers and infants -- lined up in Olathe, Kan., for free vaccine to protect themselves and their children against the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus. As in many other communities across the nation, the new vaccine has been difficult to find here. "We've had a really hard time," said Angela Kruger, who braved wind chills in the 30s along with her four foster children -- all younger than 6 years of age -- while waiting in line during the Johnson County Health Department's H1N1 vaccine clinic on Nov. 24. "(The children) had a clinic at their school, but they ran out really fast. It's frustrating."

The CDC has updated its estimates related to the spread of the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus, and the numbers are staggering. The agency estimates that from April to mid-October, there were 22 million H1N1 illnesses in the United States, with 98,000 hospitalizations and 3,900 deaths, according to Anne Schuchat, M.D., director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases

So, to keep family physicians abreast of the most current coding instructions from the nation's largest payers, the AAFP has created a page on the Academy's Web site devoted to H1N1 administration coding.
