Free Web Resource, Brochure Teach Hispanics About Diabetes

Compared with the general population, Hispanic patients are disproportionately affected by diabetes and hypertension, two of the primary risk factors for kidney disease. Moreover, Hispanics are twice as likely as non-Hispanic whites to develop kidney failure, according to the NIH.

To help raise awareness of these risks among this population, the National Kidney Disease Education Program is offering family physicians and their patients free Spanish-language Web-based resources designed to educate Hispanic patients about kidney disease.

To complement these Web resources, NKDEP also offers a Spanish-language brochure, "¡Cuidado! ¡La diabetes y la presión arterial alta pueden causar enfermedades de los riñones!" ("Caution! Diabetes or High Blood Pressure Can Cause Kidney Disease!") These resources discuss risk factors for kidney disease, basic kidney function and the importance of early testing. They also present a range of available progressive kidney disease medications.

The brochure may be downloaded and printed in color (PDF file: 2 pages / 436 KB. More about PDFs.) or black and white (PDF file: 2 pages / 367 KB. More about PDFs.). English- and Spanish-language versions of the brochure also may be ordered by calling (866) 454-3639. The first 50 copies of the brochure are free; additional packages of 50 are $5.
