The AAFP Foundation recently received notification of a $50,000 donation from pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca as part of its AstraZeneca Charity Challenge.

The donation is one of dozens that will be awarded by the company in 2006 as part of AstraZeneca's partnership with the Professional Golfers Association of America. The pharmaceutical company will contribute $100,000 to various health care charities at each of the 35 PGA events, for a total of $3.5 million during the course of the year.

The donation will be accepted by AAFP Foundation President Jerry Rogers, M.D., of Moorehead, Minn., and Executive Director Sandra Panther, C.F.R.E., at the John Deere Classic, a PGA golf tournament to be held July 10-16 in Silvis, Ill.

"We are extremely grateful to be the recipient of this generous donation from the AstraZeneca Charity Challenge," said Rogers. "The funds will help to support our new Health Communications project that has been established to promote better health communication between family physicians and their patients."

That project will launch during AAFP's 2006 Scientific Assembly, to be held Sept. 27-Oct. 1 in Washington, D.C.

In its notification letter to the AAFP Foundation, Joel Tau, AstraZeneca's senior manager of professional relations, wrote, "We are delighted to recognize the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation with this donation for all its good work on behalf of patients and their families. Congratulations!"
