The National Rural Health Association, or NRHA, has awarded AAFP member Raymond Wells, M.D., of Inez, Ky., the Rural Health Practitioner of the Year award in the private practice category. The award is given to rural health leaders "whose dedication and commitment exemplify the highest standards of care and service in health," according to a press release from the NRHA. Wells has been working with patients in one of the nation's poorest counties -- Martin County in Kentucky -- for 40 years. He is active with high-school and vocational school students and mentors them on the importance of returning to the Appalachia region to give back to their community.
