The Commission on Health of the Public is inviting constituent chapters and individual members to submit nominations for the AAFP Public Health Award 2008; the deadline for submissions is March 1.
Nominees for the award, which honors individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the health of the American public at the national, state or local level, may be practicing physicians, public health physicians or even nonphysicians. Chapters may resubmit the names of previous nominees by notifying commission staff in writing and providing additional or updated background materials.
The award recipient will receive a commemorative plaque, presented by AAFP President Jim King, M.D., of Selmer, Tenn., during the opening ceremony of the 2008 AAFP Scientific Assembly on Sept. 17 in San Diego. The winner also receives round-trip coach airfare, two nights' lodging and other travel-related expenses to attend the ceremony.

- L. Allen Dobson Jr., M.D., of Concord, N.C. (2007), co-founder of the North Carolina Physicians Advisory Group and a founder of the Community Care of North Carolina health care network;
- Susan Schooley, M.D., of Detroit (2006), chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the nonprofit Henry Ford Health System and voluntary medical director for the Cabrini Clinic, a free clinic providing care for Detroit's medically underserved; and
- Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., M.P.H., of Austin, Texas (2005), director of the Institute for Health Policy at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston and chair of the Partnership for Prevention's National Commission on Prevention Priorities.
