A number of AAFP members have received honors and awards and other career development opportunities in the past several months.

Family physician Richard Clover, M.D., of Louisville, Ky., and former AMA President Nancy Dickey, M.D., of College Station, Texas -- who also is a family physician -- have been elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine, or IOM, in Washington. Clover, a former member of the AAFP Commission on Clinical Policies and Research, is dean of the School of Public Health and Information Sciences at the University of Louisville. Dickey is vice chancellor for health affairs at the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center. Membership in the IOM is by election only and recognizes individuals who have made major contributions to advancements in medical science, health care and public health.

AAFP member John Fogarty, M.D., has been appointed dean of the Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee. Fogarty, chair of the Academy's Commission on Education, will begin his position on Aug. 8. Currently, he is senior associate dean for operations and associate dean for primary care at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington.

Warren Jones, M.D., of Ridgeland, Miss., has been appointed to the NIH Council of Councils. Jones, a former AAFP president, is the founding executive director of the Mississippi Institute for Improvement of Geographic Minority Health and a distinguished professor of health policy at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. The Council of Councils advises the NIH director on policies, priorities and activities and is composed of 27 members from various NIH advisory councils and committees. Jones will serve on the Council of Councils as the liaison to the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities.

David Meyers, M.D., an AAFP member from Takoma Park, Md., has been appointed director of the Center for Primary Care, Prevention and Clinical Partnerships at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in Washington. Meyers is a former president of the District of Columbia chapter and a former member of the AAFP Board of Directors. He currently serves as a delegate to the Academy's Congress of Delegates.

Academy member G. Scott Morris, M.D., M.Div., of Memphis, Tenn., has received the AMA Foundation's 2008 Pride in the Profession Award. The award is given to physicians in the United States "whose lives encompass the true spirit of being a medical professional by practicing medicine in areas of challenge or crisis or by devoting their time to public service," according to a release from the AMA Foundation. Morris is the founder and executive director of Church Health Center, a faith-based, nonprofit organization that provides affordable health care to uninsured individuals and the homeless population.
