The Center for the History of Family Medicine, or CHFM, has developed and recently unveiled a new logo and tagline (2-page PDF; About PDFs) to emphasize its increased commitment to represent, preserve and share all areas of the specialty's history.

The center, which is located at AAFP headquarters in Leawood, Kan., is the official historical repository of the AAFP, the AAFP Foundation, the American Board of Family Medicine, the Association of Departments of Family Medicine, the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors, the North American Primary Care Research Group and the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

CHFM manager Don Ivey said the center wanted a logo that would be in keeping with the new "bold champion" logo AAFP launched in October 2007, while also highlighting the center's unique role in family medicine.

The new logo depicts the capital of an Ionic Greek column, meant to evoke history and learning. The logo also carries the tagline, "Claim your heritage."

"We want to remind family physicians of the proud legacy and heritage of their specialty," Ivey said. "Throughout every era of our nation's history, GPs and FPs have been on the front lines of the American health care system."

The Center for the History of Family Medicine was established in 1992 to collect, organize, preserve and provide access to the records of the leading family medicine organizations involved in all aspects of the specialty. It also solicits personal and professional papers of family physicians and family medicine educators.
