AAFP Foundation Receives Four-Star Rating

The AAFP Foundation has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, an online resource that evaluates the financial health of thousands of charities nationwide.

According to Charity Navigator, a four-star rating means that an organization "exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its cause." Only one-fourth of the organizations evaluated by Charity Navigator receive four stars, its highest rating.

"Receiving a four-star rating from Charity Navigator is something the AAFP Foundation has been working toward for several years," executive director Craig Doane said on The Foundation's Web site. "This is a great achievement and highlights the outstanding leadership of the Foundation's board of trustees and development staff."

Charity Navigator's ratings are intended to show givers how efficiently a charity will use their financial support and to what extent the organization is growing its programs and services. The independent evaluator gives organizations a zero to 10 score in seven performance categories: program expenses, administrative expenses, fundraising expenses, fundraising efficiency, primary revenue growth, program expenses growth and working capital ratio.

The Foundation received an overall rating (2-page PDF; About PDFs) of 65.59.

The AAFP Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Academy. It seeks to advance the values of family medicine by promoting humanitarian, educational and scientific initiatives that improve the health of all people. The Foundation, which is funded in part by member donations, supports more than 20 programs each year.
