Center for the History of Family Medicine Offers New Online Resources

The Center for the History of Family Medicine, or CHFM, has added three new resources to its website as part of its mission to become the leading resource on the history of family medicine in the United States.

History Facts on File allows visitors to download materials related to some of the Center's most commonly requested topics, including detailed timelines and histories of family medicine organizations.

Online resources related to the CHFM's family medicine oral history project also are available, including a downloadable guide and PowerPoint presentation that can help visitors conduct their own oral histories.

The CHFM has been collecting oral histories since 1992 as part of its efforts to document and preserve the history of the specialty. The Center has more than 100 oral histories in audio and video formats.

A third new resource provides visitors with information and links to other repositories with materials related to the history of general practice, family medicine and the general history of medicine in the United States.

"Our goal is to be the premier resource on the history of family medicine in America, and these resources are helping us fulfill that goal," said CHFM Manager Don Ivey.

He noted the Center's web resources are an "ever-expanding and evolving project." Ivey added researchers with suggestions about other materials that should be included on the website can contact the CFHM via e-mail.

The CHFM is located at the AAFP's headquarters in Leawood, Kan., and is part of the AAFP Foundation.
