People in the News -- July

A number of AAFP members received various honors and awards this past month.
Tim McAfee, M.D., of Seattle, has been named director of the Office on Smoking and Health in the CDC's National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. McAfee, a member of the AAFP's Tobacco Cessation Advisory Committee, will begin his new job Sept. 12.

McAfee served most recently as chief medical officer of Seattle-based Free & Clear Inc., which offers phone-based behavioral coaching and Web-based learning to help employers, health plans and government agencies improve the overall health and productivity of their covered populations.

The Office on Smoking and Health is the lead federal agency for comprehensive tobacco prevention and control efforts and is dedicated to developing, conducting and supporting strategic efforts to protect the public's health from the harmful effects of tobacco use.

Brian Laing, M.D., and Katherine Neuhausen, M.D., of the University of California, San Francisco, General Hospital Family and Community Medicine Residency Program, and Tammy Chang, M.D., M.P.H., of the University of Michigan Family Medicine Residency, have been selected to participate in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Clinical Scholars program. They are among 27 physicians selected for two-year fellowships that begin in July 2011.

Participants in the clinical scholars program spend their fellowships examining the delivery, impact and organization of health care and receive their training at one of four universities: Yale University; the University of Pennsylvania; the University of Michigan; or the University of California, Los Angeles.
