As vice president for education, Pugno will lead a team of nearly 60 AAFP staff members as they work to promote high-quality, innovative education for physicians, residents and medical students that encompasses the art, science and socioeconomics of family medicine. He also will oversee all organizational activities related to medical education and CME, including the education and training of medical students and residents; student interest in the specialty of family medicine, including federal policies that affect it; and CME curriculum development, production, accreditation and regulations.

Pugno also will help direct the Academy's organization-wide strategy and policy-development activities, as well as participate in the activities of the AAFP Board of Directors.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of California-Davis School of Medicine in 1974, Pugno completed a family medicine residency at the Ventura General Hospital, which is affiliated with the University of California-Los Angeles. He later earned his master's degree in public health from the Loma Linda University School of Public Health in Loma Linda, Calif., where he focused on multidisciplinary educational administration.
