People in the News/Awards -- June

A number of AAFP members received various honors and awards this past month. In addition, the AAFP bestowed its 2011 Program of Excellence Awards on 16 medical school family medicine interest groups.

AAFP member J. Lloyd Michener, M.D., of Durham, N.C., and two others with ties to family medicine recently were named to the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, or NCCAM.

Michener is chairman of the department of community and family medicine at Duke University and director of the Duke Center for Community Research. He also is a clinical professor in the Duke University School of Nursing.

Three others also were named to the advisory council:

NCCAM, part of the NIH, is the lead federal agency for complementary and alternative medicine research.

M. Norman Oliver, M.D., M.A., of Charlottesville, Va., has been appointed chair of the department of family medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine.

Oliver is an associate professor in the departments of family medicine, public health sciences, and anthropology. He also is the medical school's associate dean for diversity and serves as director of the University of Virginia Center on Health Disparities.

The Academy has named 16 medical school family medicine interest groups, or FMIGs, winners of the 2011 Program of Excellence, or POE, Award for their outstanding activities in generating interest in family medicine.

The POE awards recognize FMIGs for their superior performance in FMIG operation, community service, promoting the value of primary care, exposure to family medicine and family physicians, professional development and measures of success.
