Planning for retirement can raise some difficult issues. From transferring patients and closing a practice to rediscovering a spouse, and from making sure the financial aspects of retirement are covered to figuring out just what to do with all the free time -- there are a myriad of changes.

But others have been there and navigated this tricky terrain successfully. Family physician Edward Shahady, M.D., of Tallahassee, Fla., shares what he learned during his retirement transition in his AAFP-published book, A Physician's Guide to the Art of Successful Retirement.

The book covers such topics as preparation and planning, fears and concerns, reasons for retirement, closing a medical practice, keys to well being, how to spend time after retirement, and refitting a relationship with a spouse or significant other.

In addition, the book also includes a retirement questionnaire, a state-by-state list of volunteers in health care legislative grid and an updated practice brief on protecting patient information after practice closing.
