AAFP Resource Provides Clarification on CMS' e-Prescribing Incentive Program

There's no doubt that some confusion has arisen regarding what's required of physicians who want to participate in CMS' electronic-prescribing, or e-Rx, incentive program. That's why the AAFP has created new resources (3-page Word file; About Downloading) to help family physicians understand how they can both earn an incentive payment and avoid a penalty.
The three-page guide is front-loaded with charts that clearly lay out four specific steps physicians can take to keep from getting hit with a penalty fee. That information is paired with three specific actions that will help ensure physicians get a bonus payment.

- What is code G8553, and when do I report it?
- What are the denominator codes?
- What is a qualified e-Rx system?
- Does the penalty apply to all physicians and nonphysician professionals?
- Does participation in the Medicare EHR incentive program exempt me from the penalty?
Physicians also can link to resources provided by the Academy's Center for Health IT, as well as CMS educational materials, directly from the AAFP guide.
