Registration Now Open for Free AAFP Physicians Direct Webinar

Event Will Demonstrate Value of Secure Clinical Messaging

By Sheri Porter

Registration is open for a free webinar designed to help family physicians better understand how the Academy's secure clinical messaging system -- AAFP Physicians Direct -- can help improve the efficiency, quality and coordination of patient care.

Space is limited for the one-hour event, which will be held on Sept. 7 at noon CDT.

Steven Waldren, M.D., director of the AAFP's Center for Health IT, told AAFP News Now that since the launch of Physicians Direct on June 22, he's talked to many members who understand the overall value of a secure messaging system but aren't sure how to integrate such a system into their practice workflow.

"The webinar will demonstrate the key functionalities of the service and how it can support streamlined communications between physicians," said Waldren.

"I remember what it was like to play 'phone tag' with other physicians during the patient referral process," said Waldren. "The value of this product is that it eliminates physician reliance on faxes and the uncertainty of knowing if critical patient information was received on the other end."

The webinar, "Simplifying Electronic Health Information Sharing for Improved Care," will be co-hosted by the AAFP and Surescripts. Participating physicians and practice administrators can expect a product demonstration and plenty of time to ask questions.

Participants in the webinar, which will be archived, can expect to see exactly how Physicians Direct can help physicians
  • coordinate information-sharing across medical sites regardless of electronic health record system compatibility;
  • improve practice efficiency by replacing faxed communications with secure electronic messages; and
  • facilitate the collaboration of health care professionals through electronic sharing of patient care summaries, physician referrals and lab results.
The Academy is extending its special launch rate of $7.50 per month for the first year of the service -- a 50 percent savings -- through the end of September.
