New Money Available to Family Physicians

Take Advantage of Latest Advance Payment ACO Model Funding Opportunity

By News Staff

Business of Medicine
Family physicians looking to participate in CMS' Medicare Shared Savings Program by organizing their own accountable care organization (ACO) have yet another opportunity to apply for startup funds available through the Advance Payment ACO Model Program.
Interested physicians shouldn't delay, however, because letters of intent -- the mandatory first step in applying to participate in the advance payment model program -- are due by June 29.

Then, on Aug. 1, CMS' Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) will start accepting applications for this third round of advance payment model ACOs, which is set to begin on Jan.1, 2013.

The advance payment model program was created by the CMMI to provide certain physicians with the upfront money they would need to invest in infrastructure and increased staffing; both are necessary to enable physicians to lead the care coordination called for in the ACO model.

The program specifically targets physician-based ACOs and physicians located in rural areas.
