Free Webinar Helps Family Physicians Prepare for ICD-10

By News Staff

Oct. 1, 2014, is closer than you think. That red-letter day signals the federally mandated implementation date for the nationwide transition to the ICD-10-CM code sets for outpatient diagnosis coding, and HHS is telegraphing to the AAFP and other medical associations that the deadline will be enforced.

Thus, family physicians from coast to coast need to begin preparing for the changeover from ICD-9 to ICD-10 in earnest.

To help FPs get ready, TransforMED's Delta-Exchange network is offering a free webinar on ICD-10 preparation on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. CST. The moderator for the one-hour webinar will be Debra Seyfried, M.B.A., C.P.C., an AAFP coding and compliance specialist.

Seyfried, a certified coder since 2000, recently received additional training from the American Health Information Management Association that certifies her as an official ICD-10 trainer.

Seyfried will focus her presentation on three topic areas that are foundational to achieving a smooth transfer from ICD-9 to ICD-10. Specifically, she will discuss how to
  • assess and clean up billing departments to ensure peak performance in ICD-9 before the introduction of new challenges posed by ICD-10;
  • work with health IT vendors and ancillary suppliers, such as labs and radiology providers, to ensure the seamless flow of electronic data in ICD-10; and
  • prepare for the educational needs of staff members relative to ICD-10, including where such learning should take place and in what form.
During the webinar, Seyfried also will walk physicians through steps they can take to maximize cash flow while their practices are busy with ICD-10 transition tasks.

Physicians unable to participate in the webinar in real time can view an archived version at their convenience.
