The encouraging news for family medicine generated by the results of the 2006 National Resident Matching Program hasn't yet trickled down to third-year medical students. That's because for them, the so-called Match process is just starting.
"How do I choose a specialty?" "What references should I use?" "What resources are available?" "How do I prepare a curriculum vitae and personal statement?" "How should I present myself at an interview?" These questions and more can bombard the minds of third-year students.
Thankfully, the AAFP has the perfect resource to help -- one that answers not only all of these questions but also tackles the ones students haven't even thought of yet.
Strolling Through the Match offers nearly 60 pages of how- , where- and why-tos, including a residency application timeline and checklist so students can track their progress and stay ahead of deadlines. But for all the information and usefulness Strolling Through the Match holds, its most appealing feature may be its price: free.
April is the recommended time for students to begin reviewing specialty and residency materials, so now's the time to order. Strolling Through the Match may be ordered online or by calling (800) 944-0000 and asking for item No. 108. Although the publication itself is free, you can expect to pay a minimal amount for shipping and handling.
