The AAFP Commission on Science has announced the winners of the AAFP's 2006 Resident Scholars Competition and encourages residents to vie for the 2007 awards.
Ann Rodden, D.O., of Charleston, S.C., won $300 for "Does Fingernail Polish Affect Pulse Oximeter Readings?" Sarah Parrott, D.O., of Mission, Kan., won $200 for "Peer Coaching Improves Residents' Teaching Skills in a Randomized Controlled Trial," and Curi Kim, M.D., of Ann Arbor, Mich., won $100 for "Residency Education Through the Family Medicine Morbidity and Mortality Conference." In addition, Cherie Shehata, M.D., of Mililani, Hawaii, received honorable mention for "Cancer in Kosrae State, Federated States of Micronesia."
The deadline for entering the 2007 competition is Oct. 1. The guidelines for that competition, which will be similar to the guidelines for the 2006 competition, will be posted online within a few months. They include starting the research project during the residency and completing it during or immediately following the residency. Also, family physicians who completed their residencies in 2005 or who will do so this year are eligible for the 2007 competition.
