The Pisacano Leadership Foundation began the Pisacano Scholars Leadership Program in 1993, three years after the death of Nicholas Pisacano, M.D., founding executive director of the ABFM.
The scholarships are intended to reimburse a portion of the medical school debt recipients have incurred by the time they conclude their family medicine residencies. A portion of the funds are distributed to student scholars during their fourth year of medical school, with the remaining funds distributed on a yearly basis during the required three-year residency. Pisacano Scholars are evaluated each year by the Pisacano Leadership Foundation's board of directors to ensure their continued eligibility for the program.
The maximum total scholarship award is $28,000, and there is no service commitment requirement after completion of residency.
