STFM Offers New IMG Residency Prep Courses

Program Directors Can Preview Content During May 4 Webinar

By News Staff

The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, or STFM, is offering a series of international medical graduate, or IMG, residency preparation Web-based courses designed to help orient IMGs to the U.S. health care system and graduate medical education.
Professional Development
Although the course content is appropriate for all incoming residents, the self-study courses were developed specifically to help residents who are IMGs be well prepared when they begin their training in the United States. The course modules cover
  • the U.S. health care system,
  • expectations of American patients,
  • communication with patients and their families,
  • operations within a family medicine residency program, and
  • succeeding in a U.S. family medicine residency program.
Each module features a fixed path through the course material, with quizzes interspersed. Learners can bookmark their place in the modules and return at their convenience.

Family medicine residency program directors and faculty are invited to participate in a free webinar to view the content of the new STFM materials. The webinar will broadcast at 2 p.m. CDT on May 4 and will feature a 20-minute demonstration and a question-and-answer session. Registration is available online.

Residency programs may purchase these courses for their residents. The programs will receive weekly progress reports for eight weeks, including information about residents' progress toward completion and quiz scores.

Further details on the content and cost of the modules are available on the STFM website (2-page PDF; About PDFs).
