Adults are self-treating with over-the-counter (OTC) medications in record numbers. Retail sales of these medications have climbed steadily in the United States since the early 1990s and topped $15.4 billion in 2006. Adults are not only treating themselves but also their children. In a given month, more than 50 percent of pre-school-aged children had received some type of OTC medication. This monograph addresses the appropriate use of the most common OTC medications.
