Learning Objectives & Author Information

After reading this monograph, participants will be able to do the following:
  • Apply their knowledge of commonly used over-the-counter (OTC) medications (analgesics, decongestants, antihistamines, antitussives and expectorants), including evidence of effectiveness, side effects and potential drug-drug interactions, to counsel patients about the appropriate use of these medications.
  • Formulate strategies to mitigate the risk associated with the use of OTC medications in certain populations (children, elderly, pregnant or breastfeeding women and patients who have certain preexisting conditions).
  • Identify patient factors that contribute to misuse of OTC medications and counsel patients to help prevent potential problems.
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team (physicians, clinical support staff, pharmacists) to ensure that patients receive consistent messages about OTC medications.
