Submissions are requested by the AAFP Commission on Science for the Annual Resident Scholars Competition. These awards recognize resident achievement in research and scholarly activity. Please note that the Competition now focuses on two categories for resident submissions (Discovery and Synthesis), which are further clarified below.
New Guidelines for 2008 Resident Scholars Competition

Guidelines
- Applicant must be the first author consistent with their contributions to the overall project.
- The paper may present research, or a scholarly discussion, on any topic of relevance to family practice. Two categories are available for resident submissions:
New This Year
Discovery -- This category includes reports of analyses of hypothesis-driven research, analyses of clinical process improvement/quality improvement project outcomes, and other analyses of quantitative or qualitative data. Criteria for judging this category of award include :
- Rigor of research methods
- Relevance of topic to family medicine
- Quality of writing
- Project finished with data analysis complete
Synthesis -- This category includes systematic reviews and case reports with literature reviews. Criteria for judging this category of award include:
- Rigor of literature search strategy/comprehensiveness of literature review
- Relevance of topic to family medicine
- Quality of writing
Requirements
- The research hypothesis must have been developed and the research project must have started during the residency program.
- The work must have been completed during or immediately following completion of residency. The 2008 competition will be open to current residents and residents who completed training during either 2006 or 2007. Papers completed prior to enrollment in a residency program will not be eligible.
- There is no restriction on length or number of authors.
- Applicants may submit only one paper. The paper should be printed on 8½ x 11 white stock papers ready for photocopying. Applicants are responsible for submitting a copy of their entry; providing only a web address or reference for a published citation is not sufficient and such submissions will not be accepted.
- Extraneous materials, such as letters to the editor, endorsements or other materials, will not be accepted. No materials will be accepted after the deadline, including revisions of an earlier submission.
- If you have an institutional review board (IRB) approval or waiver for your study, please include a copy in your submission.
Awards
Each award will consist of a certificate and a check as noted below. The check and certificate will be provided to the first author only. Honorable mentions will receive a certificate only.

The Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) will waive the conference registration fee to their Annual 2008 Spring Conference for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place awardees of the Discovery Category only. If these awardees take advantage of the STFM conference fee waiver, they will be required to present their papers at the 2008 Spring STFM conference. The final choice of winners will be made at the Commission on Science meeting, January 16-20, 2008. Applicants will be notified of results after the meeting. Academy publications will be asked to publish the listing of winners. Winners are encouraged to submit their papers to family medicine journals for possible publication.
