The Smartest Thing I Ever Did as a Chapter Leader Is...

  • Go with the executive director to a planning/collaborating workshop

  • Persist with advocacy at the state and federal level
  • Begin planning for next year the year ahead, it is already going too quickly – ask all the board members to commit to participate in one of our four priority areas – get on a commission ahead of my presidency so I know a bit of what the larger national scene is – ask Terry (our chapter executive) for counsel!
  • Took three doctors for a day at our state legislative sessions – really get to know the state leaders
  • Prevent micromanagement with daily operations
  • Be treasurer first – rely on staff and commissions to push forward agenda – stay in front but not out of sight
  • Attend ALF
  • Worked collaboratively with the president, president-elect and vice president (when I became VP) and planned 3-5 year strategic and implementation plan – working with my president-elect and vice president to continue efforts so we have a coordinated, progressive effort over five years
  • Go to annual meetings of surrounding states’ chapters
  • Keep close record of little details of how meetings ran and help make a “protocol” for the chapter executive for future meetings
  • Participate in helping politicians and supporting them
  • Keep in touch weekly with the staff at IAFP

  • Go to a meeting for chapter executives and presidents
  • Start “reach out” meetings (live video conference of practical topics, CME throughout the state) – involve the vice president, president-elect, president in having a similar strategic plan instead of each having a different agenda during their year as president
