MGMA Data Use by Physicians’ Employers

The Issue

Some employers of family physicians are using data from the Medical Group Management Association’s (MGMA) annual Physician Compensation and Production Survey to create compensation systems that disadvantage family physicians relative to their peers in internal medicine. The employers are using the descriptive data prescriptively.

AAFP Response

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) reviewed the MGMA data and spoke with MGMA staff responsible for the survey. Based on the review and subsequent conversations, the AAFP has created a template letter(2 page DOCX) that AAFP members can tailor for use when they believe an employer is misusing the MGMA data. The AAFP also developed with the MGMA a joint statement(1 page PDF) to address this issue.
