Quality Payment Program (QPP)

Understanding QPP Payment Paths

The final rule for MACRA implementation was released October 2016. The rule establishes that 2017 will be the first performance year physicians will be scored to determine payment adjustments in 2019. Physicians will choose between two payment tracks: the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) or the Alternative Payment Model (APM). MIPS and AAPMs are collectively referred to as the Quality Payment Program (QPP). The initial performance period begins in 2017.

Most family physicians will initially participate in MIPS. Many aspects of existing quality programs you may already be participating in will get rolled into four performance categories under MIPS.

The infographic below highlights the path options physicians will choose. Use this and other AAFP resources to help you decide which pathway works best for your practice.
