Permitted Use

Content on this site is copyrighted. You may print and use materials from the American Academy of Family Physician's (AAFP's) website for your own personal, non-commercial, provided that all trademark, copyright, and other proprietary notices appearing in such material is retained.

Please note that American Family Physician (AFP) and Family Practice Management (FPM) are registered with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to provide a web-based permission service for academic classroom use. Please visit the AFP or FPM permission request pages to submit your request.

Other Uses

If you would like to reproduce, reprint, translate, adapt, or distribute content from the AAFP website for any purposes other than those listed above, you must seek permission from the AAFP. You may complete the online permission request form or submit your request by U.S. mail, fax, or email to the Intellectual Property Department, AAFP, 11400 Tomahawk Creek Parkway, Leawood, KS 66211-2672; fax: (913) 906-6093; email: copyrights@aafp.org.

If you do not use the online permission request form, your request should include the following information:

About the material you would like to use:

  • Title of page/section you want to use
  • URL of the page/section
  • Identify content; provide a sample if possible

About your proposed use:

  • Name of your website, publication, program, or product
  • URL of website
  • Name of publisher or sponsor
  • Type/format of publication in which the AAFP content will appear (e.g., website, newsletter, book, periodical, CD-ROM)
  • Estimated number of copies to be printed or produced
  • Whether the copies will be sold or free. If free, what funding, if any, is affiliated with the program/project?

Please note: Responses to permission requests usually take 14 to 21 business days from the time a request is received. Response times may be longer during periods of high volume. Incomplete requests will be returned and will not be processed. All rushed requests warrant a $50 rush fee. Responses to rush requests will be within five business days from the date of receipt.

Fees and Payments

The permission fee depends on, among other things, the prupose of the use, the medium form, and the amount of content being reprinted. Payment should be made in U.S. currency and must be received before permission is granted. (Checks and credit cards are accepted.)

Content Licensed to Databases

The AAFP has the authority to license content for which we are the copyright holder to database companies and/or document delivery services. Such database companies may distribute our content to third-party distributors with prior approval of the AAFP. The following are companies with which we have agreements for AFP and FPM:
