Family Physician of the Year

Created: 1977 - Revised 1995

Previously: Family Doctor of the Year

The AAFP Family Physician of the Year is selected each year from among AAFP physician members in good standing who are directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities that enhance the quality of life of the community. Candidates for the award are nominated by their chapters. In most cases, each chapter nominates its state-level Family Physician of the Year winner for the national competition.

The Family Physician of the Year is an established recognition program of the AAFP. It has been conducted annually since 1977. From 1977 to 1982 the competition was co-sponsored with Good Housekeeping magazine. The AAFP has been the sole sponsor of the competition since 1983. The recipient is announced at the AAFP Family Medicine Experience (FMX) each fall.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Provides his/her patients with compassionate, comprehensive, and caring family medicine on a continuing basis.
  2. Enhances the quality of his/her community by being directly and effectively involved in community affairs and activities.
  3. Acts as a credible role model professionally and personally to his/her community, to other health professionals, and residents and medical students.
  4. Stands out among his/her colleagues.

The winner is determined by a panel consisting of the immediate past chair of the Commission on Membership and Member Services, a current member of the CMMS Executive Committee, and the current AAFP Family Physician of the Year. If there is no clear winner, the top five nominees will be resubmitted to the judges. A final ranking of the top five will determine the winner.

Call for entries are solicited in the fall/winter of each year.
