John L. Bender, MD, MBA, FAAFP


John L. Bender, MD, MBA, FAAFP, a family physician in Fort Collins, Colorado, is a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 131,400 physicians and medical students nationwide. As an AAFP board member, Bender advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients nationwide to inspire positive change in the U.S. health care system.

Bender is senior partner and chief executive officer at Miramont Family Medicine. He is a past president of the Colorado Medical Society and past president and board chair of the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians. He was elected chairman of the board for Physicians Accountable Care Solutions, LLC, a nationwide accountable care organization, which produced more than $10 million in Medicare savings in 2015. He is also an associate professor of family medicine with a preceptor appointment to the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and a preceptor to Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He teaches medical students and midlevel providers-in-training in his private sector group medical practice.

In 2009 and 2013, Miramont Family Medicine earned Level 3 medical home designation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance. In 2010, Miramont won the national Health Information Management Systems Society Nicholas E. Davies Award of Excellence, an award that recognizes outstanding achievement in generating improvement of care outcomes and return on investment through the use of health information technology. Bender has served on the NCQA Review Oversight Committee and previously chaired the HIMSS Davies Ambulatory Award Committee. Bender also served on the editorial board for Medical Economics magazine for several years.

Bender’s military service includes 11 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Naval Reserve as a flight surgeon, and two years as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve, during which time he deployed to Kosovo in response to the Serbian offensive.

Bender has been involved with the AAFP at the national and state level. He was first elected in the National Conference of Constituency Leaders, then to the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians Board of Directors, followed by promotion to president. Bender has served for five years on the AAFP’s Finance and Insurance Commission, including one year as chair. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the AAFP Foundation and on the Board of Curators for the Center for the History of Family Medicine. He has also worked behind the scenes to bring several pieces of legislation before Colorado state government that have now become law. Most recently, Bender served as an AAFP delegate to the Congress of Delegates. In 2014, the Colorado AFP named Bender their Family Physician of the Year.

Bender has been a member of the AAFP since 2000. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in chemistry and biology, and later his masters of business administration from Regis University, Denver, Colorado. He earned his medical degree from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, and completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City.

He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
