    Erica Swegler

    Erica W. Swegler, MD, FAAFP, a family physician in Austin, Texas, is a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians. The AAFP represents 134,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. As an AAFP board member, Swegler advocates on behalf of family physicians and patients to inspire positive change in the US health care system.

    Throughout her medical career, Swegler has provided the full spectrum of care to patients of all ages. She currently owns Beacon Family Health Care in Austin. In addition, she serves as a preceptor for medical students through the Texas Family Medicine Preceptorship Program, a program that matches Texas medical students with an experienced and skilled family physician for a two-to-four-week period to help them gain real life experience in a community setting.

    Swegler has been involved in the AAFP at the national and state level since 1986. She has served on numerous AAFP committees and commissions, including the Commission on Health Care Services, the Commission on Quality and Practice and the Commission on Governmental Advocacy. She has served as president of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians and as Texas delegate to the AAFP Congress of Delegates. In addition, Swegler currently is a board member of the chapter’s political action committee and foundation board of trustees.

    She has been a physician of the day with the Texas state legislature since 1989 and served on the Physician Advisory Committee for the Dallas-Fort Worth Business Group on Health. Swegler was recognized for her dedication to patients and family medicine in 2006, when she was named the Texas Family Physician of the Year. She represented primary care as a member of the Texas Council on Cardiovascular Disease for seven years, with her tenure ending in 2011.

    Swegler earned her Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Dallas, where she graduated magna cum laude. She completed her medical degree at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston, and her family medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. In addition, Swegler graduated in the first class of a joint UT Southwestern-UT Dallas program with a certificate in medical management.

    She is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has the AAFP Degree of Fellow, an earned degree awarded to family physicians for distinguished service and continuing medical education.
