Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) - AAFP Legislative Stance

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) supports Controlled Substances Act (CSA) reforms to improve the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) authority to support the practice of medicine, research, law enforcement, national security, public health, and substance classification.

The AAFP encourages partnerships with the DEA, medical societies, state and local governments, relevant federal agencies, and stakeholders to improve CSA enforcement activities, program effectiveness, administration simplification, and anti-fraud awareness activities, including activities to clarify the prescription and distribution of controlled substances for “legitimate medical purposes.”

The AAFP opposes third parties having access to DEA registration numbers or requiring DEA numbers as an identifier for processing insurance claims. (2002) (2019 April BOD)
