• Helmet Laws

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recommends the use of helmets when riding motorcycles, bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, scooters, skate boards, and while skating (ice, roller, or in-line) and using city bike and scooter share programs. The AAFP supports legislation requiring appropriate helmet use and urges constituent chapters to support the enactment or preservation of state helmet laws when riding motorcycles, bicycles, all-terrain vehicles, scooters, skate boards, and while skating (ice, roller, or in-line). The AAFP acknowledges the potential public health benefits of bike and scooter share programs and encourages the safe use of these transportation methods. The AAFP recognizes these programs often do not include readily-accessible helmets, and therefore health benefits should be weighed accordingly. (1981) (2019 COD)
