  • Medical Schools, Inclusion of Historically Marginalized, Minoritized or Excluded Groups in Medicine

The  American Academy of Family Physicians endorses equitable representation of all designations and demographics in and leadership roles and other positions throughout U.S. medical institutions.

The AAFP supports programs which aim to increase the number of medical school applicants and matriculants who come from historically marginalized, minoritized or excluded groups in medicine, and to continue their lifelong professional development and leadership.

The AAFP recommends that medical schools and academic health centers commit to the development of medical careers among those historically marginalized, minoritized or excluded in medicine through early pathway programs.

The AAFP further recommends that medical schools, their associated institutions and professional societies for physicians have formal leadership programs for those historically marginalized, minoritized or excluded in medicine at all stages of medical training and practice. These programs should include but not be limited to mentorship, sponsorship, research and scholarship. (1996) (October 2025 COD)
