• Hospital Privileges as a Requirement for Insurance Participation

The AAFP believes that insurance network participation should be based on documented training and/or experience, demonstrated abilities, and current competence and should not be based solely on a physician’s type of hospital privileges or credentials. The AAFP believes the broad scope of practice of family physicians includes the practice of medicine in hospital settings; however, maintaining hospital privileges or credentials should be understood as not mandatory. A wide variety of attributes contribute to a physician’s competence and quality of care; thus, different types of hospital privileges or credentials should not be used as an absolute requirement for decisions involving insurance participation. Specific hospital privileges or credentials should not be used as cause to deny insurance participation.  (April 2020 BOD) (2020 COD)
