The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) supports access to comprehensive pregnancy and reproductive health services, including but not limited to abortion, pregnancy termination, contraception, intrauterine insemination (IUI) and surgical and non-surgical management of ectopic pregnancy. The AAFP opposes nonevidence-based restrictions on medical care and the provision of such services.
The AAFP believes that all payers – both commercial and those funded by state or federal governments - should provide coverage for initiating a pregnancy, including fertility assistance such as intrauterine insemination and assisted reproductive technologies.
In addition, the AAFP supports coverage for fertility preservation services and long-term storage of gametes and embryos for individuals undergoing treatments for cancer or other serious illnesses that may threaten fertility. Ensuring payer coverage for these services across all plan types is essential to support informed reproductive decision-making and should be considered part of comprehensive, patient-centered care.
