  • Resident and Student Education, Discrimination In

    The American Academy of Family Physicians condemns discrimination against resident and student learners in any form, including but not limited to, that on the basis of actual or perceived race, religion, color, natural origin, ethnic affiliation, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, age, mental health, physical health, disability, pregnancy, body habitus, socioeconomic status, or geographic location of training.

    The AAFP strongly supports efforts to advance equity in medical training by addressing structural barriers, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring all learners are supported. Strategies to achieve these aims include but are not limited to:  

    • Implementing mandatory training on anti-discrimination practices. 
    • Shaping equitable language and narratives in education by promoting equity-centered curriculum and addressing historical context. 
    • Establishing reporting mechanisms to promote institutional accountability. 
    • Developing methods to evaluate the prevalence of discrimination and the effectiveness of anti-discrimination initiatives in medical education environments  
    • Emphasizing the critical role of comprehensive support systems for individuals facing discrimination, including access to mental health services, mentorship, advocacy, and other resources tailored to their specific needs.
