• School Commute and Transportation Safety

The American Academy of Family Physicians advocates for legislative and educational efforts in the promotion of safe school commute and transportation for the nation’s children. These efforts may include, but are not limited to, research on school bus safety, private vehicle use, pedestrian safety, bicycle, public transit, and snowmobiles. Research efforts should also include seat belt use, safe routes to school programs, specific regulations and standards for school transportation, and mandatory special licensing and training for school bus drivers. Given the increase in other methods of transportation other than the traditional school bus, policy and advocacy efforts should also focus on the cost, safety, funding, infrastructure, and fair outcomes of all school transportation methods to ensure equity for low-income students, students of color, students with disabilities, and students living in a rural environment.
