Am Fam Physician. 1998;58(4):622

If you haven't done so already, you may want to save a copy of the article “Immunizations: Current Recommendations,” by Samuel B. Adkins III, M.D., published in the September 1, 1997 issue of AFP (page 865). Not only is this article a useful resource for busy family physicians trying to keep up-to-date with quickly changing recommendations, it is also this year's recipient of the Walter H. Kemp Award for editorial excellence.

The article, which was one in a series of “Practical Therapeutics” articles from the Department of Family Practice at East Carolina University School of Medicine, Greenville, N.C., was selected as the winner from over 100 articles evaluated on the basis of quality of editorial presentation, scientific substance, originality of thought and relevance to family practice.

The Kemp Award was established in 1986 as a way of recognizing AFP's outstanding family physician authors. The award, which is presented annually and carries a $1,000 honorarium, was named after Walter H. Kemp, who served as managing publisher of AFP for 15 years. Candidates for the award are screened by the medical editor and managing editor, and several top candidates are nominated for evaluation by the AAFP Commission on Continuing Medical Education. A final recommendation is then passed on to the AAFP Board of Directors for review and approval.

It's always difficult to pick a single star from AFP's galaxy of outstanding articles. This year's closest competitors—also articles you'll surely want for your files—are “Secondary Hypertension,” by Bobbi B. Adcock, M.D., and Robert B. Ireland, Jr., M.D. (March 1997, page 1263), “Opportunistic Infections and Psychosocial Stress in HIV,” by Susan Louisa Montauk, M.D., and Bruce Gebhardt, M.D. (July 1997, page 87) and “Pets and Parasites,” by Gregory Juckett, M.D. (November 1, 1997, page 1763).

Our warmest thanks and congratulations go to Dr. Adkins, his runners-up, and all of AFP's other star contributors.
