    Description

This is a 13-month fellowship that will train the physician to independently evaluate normal and complicated obstetric patients, as well as manage their antepartum, labor, delivery, and post-partum care. Family physicians are uniquely positioned to be able to care for women and their children and act as a liason within their community and their health system to promote maternal/ child health. Graduates of the fellowship would be uniquely suited to practice as faculty in a family medicine residency program, or practice rural medicine or global health. The fellow will spend the majority of their time on labor and delivery at Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC but will also get experience in outpatient obstetric and gynecologic care and procedures within the UPMC system. Towards the end of their fellowship they take some independent call as the Family Medicine OB attending on call with backup from the generalist service. The last month of fellowship will be spent on labor and delivery at one of our community sites where the fellow will learn to manage patients in a more rural setting where resources are more limited and transfer may be required. Backup for that month will be provided by the on staff obstetrician. Fellows will spend a ½ day a week providing full spectrum care to their own panel of patients in one of our Family Medicine offices to help maintain their skills. They will also spend a ½ day a week working with our fellowship trained FM-OB providers to precept obstetrics in a family medicine office which helps to develop their skills in consultation.
