Program Description
The University of Vermont provides an ideal environment for family medicine training combining the resources of a university hospital with a thriving rural community practice. Residents are challenged to learn office, hospital and procedural skills. Flexibility in the curriculum is provided through longitudinal curricula and elective time. Personal growth and development are fostered by expert faculty mentors and structured individually focused community and practice improvement projects. The University of Vermont has a special emphasis on Sports Medicine, Rural Medicine and Obstetrics. The Sports Medicine curriculum is taught by a family physician who completed a sports medicine fellowship. He is also an assistant team physician for the University of Vermont athletics, St. Michael's College athletics, the Vermont Lake Monsters (single A professional baseball affiliate) and the Vermont Frost Heaves (professional basketball). Training includes hands-on clinic sessions as well as a longitudinal lecture series. Rural opportunities abound with our rural rotation as well as elective opportunities. Lastly, we pride ourselves in training our residents to feel comfortable practicing low-risk Obstetrics in their future practice. We fully support obstetric electives for our residents.
