Program Description
The OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is located at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, OH. Riverside Family Medicine has an established tradition of excellence and is celebrating 50 years of training family medicine leaders. Scholarship, quality improvement, inclusivity, leadership, and communication skills are intentionally developed during each year of training. Our residents progress from a focus on inpatient care during intern year to broad outpatient experiences as an upper-level resident. We offer family medicine residents the acuity and variety of a large tertiary care center with an academic focus and multiple medical school affiliations. Residents work in tandem with Riverside’s internal medicine, psychiatry, and OB/GYN residencies to create a robust hospital medicine experience. This maintains a community hospital feel while providing the appreciation for residency culture. Our on-site, standalone family practice center has nearly 20,000 patient visits per year for acute care, chronic care, and specialties within family medicine (including sports medicine, OMT, women’s health procedures, dermatologic skin procedures, MAT, and acupuncture). We also provide robust pediatric care experiences, including an independent newborn nursery service at Riverside Methodist Hospital, inpatient collaboration with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and NICU experiences. In addition, 27% of our office patient population is under the age of 19! Residents benefit from a large and experienced residency faculty with broad skill sets and areas of interest. They have advanced training in sports medicine, addiction medicine, academic medicine, medical informatics, public health, and leadership development. Several of our faculty hold leadership roles locally and present nationally on topics of physician well-being, diversity and inclusion, care of the underserved, and faculty development. All residents participate in community experiences, including our Wellness on Wheels Primary Care mobile unit and in our in-office Food is Health program. Scholarly activity and population health (SAPH) is incorporated in our residency curriculum to give all residents protected time and faculty guidance to complete population health projects that align with their interests and the needs of our patient population. Our program also has ACGME osteopathic recognition, which allows any residents who enters the recognition pathway to graduate with osteopathic distinction. Riverside Family Medicine is excited to shape the future of family medicine as one of the first 8 programs in the country accepted into the ACGME’s Family Medicine Advancing Innovation in Residency Education (FM-AIRE) program. This allows us additional flexibility in program requirements to offer innovative training pathways. Up to 2 residents per academic year can enter a longitudinal PGY2-PGY4 area of concentration focused on leadership development and academic/teaching preparation, allowing them to get the most of their residency experience! Upon graduation from the Riverside Family Medicine Residency, you will have the skillset and confidence to be a leader in the field of family medicine, wherever that road may lead you. #RFMleads
