Program Description

The training at Mercy Merced emphasizes preparation for practice in rural and underserved environments. During their training, residents perform on average over 60 vaginal deliveries. The OB/GYN experience includes not only vaginal deliveries, but the residents also acquire competences in basic OB ultrasound, fetal scalp electrode placement, and intra-uterine pressure catheter placement and management. Additionally, for the resident with a special interest in obstetrics, there is ample opportunity for more advanced training and experience in vaginal deliveries and operative obstetrics. OB fellowship acceptance rate at graduation from Mercy Merced has been 100%. Management of the critically ill patient of all ages and in any setting is another core emphasis of our program. There is a strong Intensive Care component where residents manage well over 80 critically-ill patients, many who are on ventilators. The Pediatric experience includes constant involvement in resuscitation of newborns, rounding in the NICU and a rotation at Valley Children’s Hospital. The residents also spend much time managing patients in our high volume ER throughout their three years of training. Additionally, the family medicine residents at Mercy Merced are an integral part of the Code Blue team, gaining a high level of competence in all team member roles. As the Family Medicine residency is the only residency in this hospital, there is never competition for experience from residents in other specialties. Most importantly, the family medicine residents of Mercy Merced Medical Center have the privilege of caring for a highly diverse multicultural patient population from economically disadvantaged portions of Merced in the Family Care Center. Our residents gain great experience in managing patients with a wide variety of complicated medical problems in patients of all ages. The Mercy Merced Family Medicine Program is particularly suited to residents who desire a career that requires a highly trained independently capable physician. Our residents have gone on to develop successful careers as small town rural physicians, doing missionary work in developing countries, and as emergency room physicians. They have also been highly successful in advanced training fellowships in obstetrics and in hospitalist work.
