Program Description
The Department of Community and Family Medicine at Howard University Hospital provides sound educational program for trainees in Family Medicine. The Howard University Family Medicine Residency Training Program began in 1970 as one of the first university-based Family Medicine programs in the country. It has maintained excellence in patient care and postgraduate training by sustaining these objectives: • providing training for graduates to be Board eligible in Family Medicine; • enhancing residents’ personal and intellectual skills in assessing total health care needs; • offering training for residents in skills to organize, implement, and coordinate longitudinal and continuous care; • providing a comprehensive understanding of emotional and physical well-being; • developing residents’ skill in making rational decisions, and accepting responsibility for quality patient care; • promoting an understanding of health care financing and Practice Management; • assisting residents in developing research skills which will foster greater understanding of community health care needs; and • promoting an understanding of the needs of disadvantaged communities with special emphasis on the needs of high-risk medically indigent, elderly, and minority populations.
