Program Description
With four residents per year, the residency program offers an individualized approach – preparing clinically skilled physicians who work effectively as part of larger healthcare systems. Residents will receive training in quality assessment and improvement, research and public policy, while developing leadership and team-building skills through collaboration on interprofessional teams and community engagement. We provide a high-tech, patient- and family-centered environment coupled with unsurpassed excellence in quality of care measures and patient satisfaction scores. As the first residency program at West Kendall Baptist Hospital, we are uniquely positioned to provide a rich and personalized residency learning experience. Our vision is to offer the preeminent family medicine residency program in South Florida, attracting, training and retaining highly skilled physicians to serve the South Florida community. Our innovative curricular features include: Residents are taught research, teaching and leadership skills in collaboration with Florida International University faculty and medical students. Nursing home visits and house calls are made throughout the program. Hospice care is an important component of all three years of the program. The Green Family Foundation Neighborhood HELP™ community outreach program will help to invest residents in their communities. A three-month block in the first year combines all musculoskeletal education, including rheumatology and dermatology. This block also has a strong component of sports medicine. Each resident will be assigned to a local school’s football team to serve as their physician. Residents will admit patients in the emergency room for the first two years. By the time of the PGY3 emergency medicine block rotation, residents will be skilled and able to function and learn at a high level. A two-hour weekly session each year in a private practice provides the opportunity for longitudinal follow-up of obstetric patients and patients with gynecological illnesses. The leadership training curriculum will include a focus on quality improvement and patient- and family-centered care. Residents will participate in hospital committees and lead a quality initiative during their training.
