    Program Description

The state of Hawai’i faces the same issues most rural locations face: an aging physician workforce, spousal/partner employment and difficulty attracting younger physicians who will stay to provide care in under-resourced settings. Hawai’i faces additional challenges such as geographic isolation, a higher cost of living, lower physician compensation and fewer loan repayment options. Hawaii Island (the Big Island) is the largest landmass in the chain of islands, approximately the size of Connecticut. Hawai’i Island is home to the active volcano Kilauea, the nearly 14,000 foot mountains of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the mountain shadow deserts of lava flow on the west side of the island, and the tropical rain forests on the eastern or windward side. Hilo Medical Center on Hawai’i Island serves as the sponsoring institution of the first residency program located outside of metro-Honolulu (Oahu island). Launched on July 1, 2014, the development of the Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency (HIFMR) as a program was based on the evidence that indicates that rural exposure and training is more likely to result in physicians who will serve the rural parts of the country. The Hawai’i Island Family Medicine Residency (HIFMR) program is an ACGME accredited 6-6-6 program that has selected residents who have ties to Hawai’i and/or a strong interest in rural medicine to help mitigate some of the extra challenges faced in providing training in a remote archipelago. To date, all graduates of the program have chosen to stay in Hawaii to practice and all have passed their boards.
