Program Description
The Prisma Health Tuomey Family Medicine Residency strives to create an ideal learning environment for developing future Family Medicine physicians. The program intends its graduates to continue to serve the Sumter area, its surrounding rural communities, and other South Carolina communities. We train our residents to be skilled family physicians possessing compassion, character, and balance. We create an educational environment where residents grow into highly skilled, compassionate clinicians. Through caring for our most vulnerable and underserved communities, we provide a learning environment focusing on the well-being of our faculty, residents, care team members, patients and families with a humanistic approach supporting professional development. Our faculty help create an optimal learning environment, they include: • 9 Family Physicians • Sports medicine, geriatric, and maternity care specialists • Behavioral medicine • Medical and surgical sub-specialists We emphasize full-breadth family medicine and care for the underserved. Our diverse patient population offers broad exposure to all age groups. Our partnership with Tandem Health, a federally qualified community health carter, ensures that residents will train in a community-focused practice centered on the care of the underserved. We prepare our residents to provide a leadership in patient-centered medical homes, health systems, and the towns where they will practice.
